“Only in pr
ayers does one achieve that complete and harmonious assembly of body, mind and spirit which gives the frail human being its unshakeable strength.”
-Alexis Carrel
PRAYER
I do not undertake to say
That literal answers come from Heaven,
But I know this-that when I pray,
A comfort, a support is given
That helps me rise o’er earthy things
As larks soar up on airy wings.
I do not stop to reason out
The why and how I do not care,
Since I know this, that when I doubt,
Life seems a blackness of despair,
The world a tomb, and when I trust,
Sweet blossoms spring up in the dust.
Prayer has a sweet refining grace,
It educates the soul and heart.
It lends a luster to the face,
And by its elevating art
It gives the mind an inner sight
That brings it near the Infinite.
From our gross selves it helps us rise
To something which we yet may be.
And so I ask not to be wise,
If thus my faith is lost to me.
Faith with angels’ voice and touch,
Says “pray, for prayer availeth much.”
-Ella Wheeler Wilcox
CONVICTION
I’ve heard it said GOD shuts His eyes
To misery and human woe,
That He is deaf before the cries
Of all His children here below.
And though at times it does appear
That evil triumphs over good,
How little faith if I should fear
To trust Him when He said I could.
It may be true a kindly deed
Puts not penny in my purse,
And yet by every code and creed,
It never made me any worse.
And if some dreams do not come true,
And if some plans may turn out wrong,
Each new day holds a joy or two,
That I may purchase for a song.
I do not have to give account
For disappointments and for tears,
But I must pay in like amount,
For shallow mind and wasted years.
The doubter scoffs, the cynic smiles,
But what is that to me,
When my Companion through the miles,
Is such as one
as HE.
How may times I’ve called His name,
And found Him by my side,
Forgiving all, absolving blame,
That others have denied.
So let them say GOD does not care,
I know it is not true,
For there is no one anywhere,
Who does what God can do!
-Grace E. Easley
ONLY TRUST HIM
GOD knows your secret longings,
He knows your silent tears,
and even within the shadows
His hand is on your fears.
When your head is on the pillow
in the wee hours past midnight,
just trust that GOD is with you
somewhere within your room this night:
Watching, never sleeping,
He tends your fragile care,
and in the quiet hours a vigil keeping
He breathes for you a prayer.
“So do not worry and say, what are we to eat or what are we to drink or what are we to wear? For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. Seek ye first the Kingdom of GOD and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
- Matthew 6: 31-33

The last part of the poem, Only Trust Him, is omitted. This is the complete poem.
God knows your secret longings
He knows your silent tears
And even within the shadows
His hand is on your fears
When your head is on the pillow
in the wee hours past midnight
Just trust that God is with you
somewhere within your room this night
Watching, never sleeping
He tends your fragile care
and in the quiet hours a vigil keeping
He breathes for you a prayer
Just trust Him for the answers
that a questioning heart can’t give
For God holds your every tomorrow
knowing your each day is His
