2172132326_3f89b3dd26_mPutting plants in suspended containers or baskets, making can or tea pots and terrariums could enhance the place and be admiring and fascinating to anyone who will see it. When doing these, there are certain points to be considered to make the place look very attractive and even dramatic.Anyone would never keep his/her eyes to stare and feel something about it: 1) choosing the right plants 2) containers to be used 3) the arrangement 4) where the plants will be placed.

Doing any of these is not just a hobby but also a good activity wherein not only adults would enjoy but even kids. It would challenge them to create something different and after the output, many values will be learned like- love for nature, resourcefulness, creativity, and sense of responsibility.3222

Hanging Pots / Baskets

Type of soil to be used- Peat-based compost is more suitable than loam because it is lighter.

Plants suitable for hanging baskets- Spider plants, Philonderon, Wax plant, Golden Photos, Scindapsus, Hedera, Wandering Jew, etc.

Note: They should be inspected more frequently and watered accordingly.

Can / Tea Pots and Terrariums

The containers and where to get them-There is no end to the number of different containers which maybe used to enhance the beauty of your plants and indeed your room or garden too. A search through store cupboards will no doubt turn up interesting items, like old tea pots, biscuits cans, bottles and jars, wine jars, fish bowls and aquariums and fermenting jars. Junk shops also make good hunting grounds.

Note: Decorative containers and those with unusual shape would be more captivating!

Type of soil to be used- Use loamy soil for large containers and peat-based compost for small containers and bowls. Spread pebbles or baked clay granules over the bottom to avoid water logging the plants when it is watered.

Choosing and arranging plants- Choose plants needing the same conditions, otherwise they maybe over or under watered. Arrange plants at different heights. Contrasting shapes and colors make an interesting feature. Moss-covered stones, or a piece of driftwood add touch to the feature.

Terrariums

According to Merriams-Webster’s on line dictionary, “Terrariums are usually transparent enclosure for keeping and raising plants or indoor animals like lizards and turtles.” Some hobbyists or gardeners define this as “miniature world within a glass” However, there are also terrariums arrange in open containers and the best example of these are the famous dish gardens.

TOOLS/MATERIALS: 1. small spoon tied to a long stick-ideal for making planting holes 2. old fork –for raking he surface of the compost 3. cork-pushed on the end of the stick for tamping and firming roots 4. two short lengths of short wire tied to the end of a stick –ideal for lowering plants into position 5. peat-based compost soil 6. pebbles, gravel, charcoal 7. piece of blanket cut into size or capillary matting 8. bottles, jars, chosen containers 9. sprinkler or spray bottle 10. varieties of plants 11.accessories for decorations

STEPS:

1. Prepare all your materials 2. Place a layer of clean pebbles or gravel (Be sure to wash the gravel with soapy water and rinse well.) 3. Sprinkle charcoal over the pebbles or gravel. 4. A piece of blanket or capillary matting will keep the compost fouling the drainage materials below. 5. Carefully trickle in the compost which will run easier if it is a little on the dry side. 6. Aim to fill approximately 1/3 of the container so that there will be sufficient air for plants. You may add soil until it looks so appealing. 7. Slowly gently roll the plants on a flat surface, or squeeze in the palm of the hand so that the roots form a cylinder which can be gripped by the soft wire tool and lowered into the hole made by your spoon. 8. Then tamp the compost around the root with the cork. 9. Take some of the moss and place a thick layer on the top of the soil to for ground cover.10.Water the plants using spray bottle. See to it that the soil darkening in color to know that the water has reached the bottom. 11.Place the lid on your terrarium.12. They should be inspected and when the soil is looking dry, water it. 13. When the terrarium gets crowded, trim by pinching or using scissors. 14. Remember, you must tend them too.15. Fertilizers like fish emulsion or organic fertilizer could be of help.

Measurement- 1 drop : cup of water and put it once a month.

Additional information:

1. When making terrariums, you can also use single plants and these are appropriate for wine glasses, angular bottles , fish bowls, tall and clear vases.

2.Prefer plants which have a little burst of color on it, like yellow, red, or white. This will look elegant and beautiful.
